The Ethics Institute

USB-ED and The Ethics Institute (TEI) entered into a teaming and cooperation agreement to deliver TEI's flagship training offering, the Ethics Officer Certification Programme (EOCP). The EOCP is the only programme of its kind on the African continent. Since its launch in 2004, the EOCP has been attended by more than 1400 individuals from the public and private sectors, both in South Africa and from other African countries. Of these, more than 750 have been certified as Ethics Officers.

The Ethics Institute is responsible for co-ordinating all marketing, administrative and logistical aspects of the EOCP, and their subject matter experts prepare and deliver the programme. USB-ED provides academic quality assurance for the programme, with respect to content, course materials and assessments. Participants who successfully fulfil all academic requirements of the EOCP receive their certificate from USB-ED.

TEI staff also teach on a number of programmes offered by USB-ED, including the Executive Development Programme (EDP), and the African Directors Programme.

Key events

The EOCP is now in its fourth iteration, the latest of which was launched at the beginning of 2017. The ongoing innovation of the programme ensures that the content is up-to-date with regulatory developments, and responsive to participants' feedback. In 2017, in response to stakeholder interests, the programme was offered for the first time in Cape Town – likely to be the first of many. With the release of the King IV Report on Corporate Governance for South Africa in November 2016, the demand for specialised, ethics training for professionals across South Africa is on the rise.
